Week 8 Update

21/3/2019

Kia Ora RVS Community,

It has been quite a week since the events of last Friday in Christchurch.  Our thought and prayers are certainly with all those involved and effected by the attack.

I spoke with the students first thing on Monday morning and encouraged them to talk with someone they trust, be it mum and dad, teachers or others about the things that are worrying them.  We also return to Philippians 4v6 when times like this arise.

We have  well considered and practiced emergency procedures in our school.  Our earthquake and fire evacuation procedure sees our students in their entirety evacuated calmly, assembled and accounted for in 1 minute and 45 seconds.  Our reverse evacuation/lockdown procedure is also efficient and well known by our staff.  Students return to class (if outside) after 3 or more bells, classes are locked and teachers communicate with management via phone while remaining with the students.  No one is permitted in or out of the classroom during this time apart from school staff.  The school keep parents up to date during lockdown via the school app and txt (via our Student Management System).  It is important that the RVS Office always have your latest details.

We also have always had an engaged, high ratio of staff on duty at morning tea and lunchtimes keeping watch.  They wear high-vis vests so they can be easily spotted by the students and other staff alike.

Psalm 46 reminds us that The Lord is our refuge and shield, our ever present help in trouble. Proverbs 21v31 also says that "We prepare the horse for battle, but the victory is the Lords".  We prepare and work hard to be ready, knowing also that He oversees our coming and going.

Please contact me if you wish for further clarification of anything mentioned above.

God bless

Thank You!

13/3/2019

As you will be aware, we had 20+ tablets stolen from Rm 3 over the weekend.  The Police, from start to finish, worked incredibly fast and effectively.  So well in fact that they located the tablets and returned them to us only 24hours after they were reported missing.

A huge thank you to the Police from RVS!

What's Next?

7/3/2019

Kia Ora RVS Community,

There have been a lot of exciting changes happening around the school that are reflective of the hard work that has been operating behind the scenes for some time now.
POD BUILDINGS
I'm sure a number of you will have noticed the two new pod buildings that we now have situated outside the school Library. These pods are being used for two purposes:
  1. As individual tuition rooms used by the Music Academy; and
  2. One pod now holds the Middle School (Y7-10) library books.

We have laid down some green matting and will furnish the space with some tables in order that this may be used as a Year 7 - 9 space, as well as an outdoor area for library users.
YEAR 9 CLASSROOM
The new Year 9 classroom has received code of compliance and is now being fully utilised by our Year 9 students. Feedback from students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive - they love their new space!  We thank our proprietors, Elim for their work over the Christmas break to have it finished in good time.

I HAVE MOVED!
I have moved my office from the main building to the Library. This is to allow for construction to take place in the old office, with walls being moved to provide space for a New Entrant classroom. This classroom will be opened mid-year to allow for growth at the junior end of the school, which is very exciting.

With the huge growth the school has been experiencing, it becomes even more vital for parents to enrol any younger children who are not yet at school. This is especially important as Year groups will be limited in numbers and at present, we only have a few New Entrant spaces left for 2019.
MORE CONSTRUCTION
The next large building to be constructed is a large double-classroom and it will include changing rooms and toilets. This is going to be situated in front of the current Year 9 classroom towards the eastern side of the school. Construction is set to commence mid-year and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This classroom will house next year's Year 9 and Year 10 students.  There will be more information regarding the layout of the Middle & Senior School soon.
WORKING BEE AND COOKING BEE
A huge 'Thank You' to all those who participated in our Working Bee last Saturday and the Cooking Bee the weekend before. We made huge progress and it was a real pleasure working with such amazing people.  Below is a picture of Mr. Brown in his happy place...

UNIFORM
We plan to have the next round of consultation regarding uniform out within the next few weeks.  We have made good progress with the Middle/Snr (Y7-13) uniform colours and styles and  will be consulting on Junior School (Y0-6) styles and options.  This is not a process that the Board of Trustees can rush because of its impact and complexity.  We will have a uniform that looks good, is comfortable, hard-wearing, affordable and accessible by the end of the process.  Thank you for your patience and feedback to date.
May God continue to bless the families of RVS as the year moves forward.  May He continue to build this house, Psalm 127.
