The
school has very good computer facilities for both students and
staff using the PC platform and Win XP. The students have
a considerable exposure to the ICT world, using the computers
for such things as spelling tests, publishing writing, reading
programmes, research using Encarta and the internet, photo
capture and processing, as well as the less frequent uses such
as MS Publisher and Powerpoint. In addition to the above
we have some educational games, along with a few games that are
not strictly educational. Computer use is just a normal
part of our everyday programme. All student work is saved
on the network server, and both groups of computers have a good
quality printer available.
Computer
facilities include (with the exception of the new entrant
class):
·
School wide network with 9 computers (a total of 18 machines)
serving each classroom (two classrooms share a suite of 9, the
other classroom has 9 computers to itself)
·
Internet available via broadband on each network machine
·
Email available in each computer suite with an email address
for each class (room2@rvs.school.nz
etc)
·
All staff with high spec laptops
·
Staff laptops able to be network connected, enabling them to
have all facilities of the network including broadband
internet.
·
Staff laptops with long network cables allowing them to be used
to inter-work with TVs (and later digital projectors) to enable
web facilities and other teaching information to be seen class
wide.
·
Library computer linked to network with a search computer to
allow book search by students.
The
beauty of the whole arrangement is that the use of ICT has just
become a normal part of the day for our students. We look
forward to the addition of a digital projector.
In
addition to the above, we have a high quality digital camera
and a good quality digital video camera that writes directly to
a DVD. Extensive use of these is made in the classrooms
by the children as well as by staff. This adds another
dimension to our ICT activities.
